Day 1

Posted on

Welcome aboard everyone for another adventure, this time it’s around 8 weeks on a road trip across the USA.  After leaving Sydney some 30 hours before we finally arrived at Jasons apartment in the East Village on 10th & 2nd Ave.  After a quick meal we went straight to bed and surprisingly was up quite early the next morning, which was fortunate as we spent 2 hours sorting out comms (sim cards & mobile wifi) and metro cards (weekly subway pass).

Like little kids being allowed out by themselves for the 1st time, we ventured down into the subway system and headed downtown. As we approached Ground Zero we came across an old church with a cemetery within it’s grounds.  It was a warm day with many people bustling about but within the church grounds it was cool in the shade and quite peaceful. Strolling through the old headstones (some dating back to the 1700’s) there were pictures showing what the grounds looked like after 9/11 attacks and by the time we reached the bottom of the yard both Deb and I had gotten quite emotional. It was then that we got our first full view of the One World Trade Centre now erected at the WTC site.

After walking around the memorial (& souvenir gift shop) we travelled through Wall Street and on to Battery Park from where we could see the Statue of Liberty in the distance.

This is probably a good time to tell you that I do not intend to post what I deem to be “good” pictures here as a blog will not do them justice and will save them for a picture book later.  So here you are going to get the “cheesy”  iconic tourist shots with maybe a preview here & there of others.

Returning briefly to the apartment Jason whisked us out to a rooftop bar with an amazing view of the midtown city skyline (particularly the Empire State Building) where we indulged in cherry mojitos and watched the sunset.

After an enjoyable meal at a local steak restaurant we collapsed into bed exhausted
